In the past, the TEAM Spotlight feature, previously known as Teacher Spotlight, focused exclusively on TEAM members in ESL teaching roles. We have since expanded this feature to include programs, ESL support staff and even students or whole classes! If you or your program would like to be featured in the TEAM Spotlight or you would like more information about features on students or classes, please contact us through our general email, team.eal.manitoba@gmail.com, with the subject line TEAM Spotlight.

This TEAM Spotlight shines a light on the private language school Heartland International. The profile was submitted by Carol Hutchinson and Gary Gervais of Heartland International. *

Heartland International English School

Where is Heartland?

“Heartland International English School moved to a new location in downtown Winnipeg on the corner of William Avenue and King Street, right next to Market Square in the historic Exchange District on March 1, 2018. The building has been completely renovated and is the most modern and technologically advanced facility for ESL students in Manitoba. The school was founded in Winnipeg in 1999 by Gary Gervais and a second campus was opened in Mississauga, Ontario in 2015.”

What type of ESL programming does Heartland offer?

“Heartland offers English programs for international students from Entry (beginner) level up to High Advanced level. Students can start classes any Monday and their study time can be a few weeks to a year in length. They can choose from 15, 25, or 33 hour per week options. Students can study general English or in the Pathway Program for college or university entrance. There are also evening Business English and IELTS preparation classes, and Saturday CELPIP courses on offer. Heartland is an official test centre for IELTS, CELPIP, CAEL, and TOEIC.”

What professional opportunities are available for ESL teachers at Heartland?

“Heartland looks for qualified and highly experienced teachers when hiring new teachers. Teachers are generally hired as permanent employees. New teachers are supported with orientation and training to get familiar with the school and teaching methods. While starting wages for teachers are generally lower than public sector positions, Heartland offers annual bonuses and pay increases and the pay for long-term teachers is in line with public sector positions. Heartland also offers an attractive health benefits package for permanent employees and flexible vacation time. As well, teachers can supplement their regular teaching with tutoring and examining. Heartland takes teachers’ professional development seriously, and along with in-house training, pays to send staff to conferences, training meetings, and webinars.”
