unConference – Global Peace Index
Are you interested in learning about the social, economic and political factors that contribute to peacefulness (or lack thereof) in the world? Have you ever heard of the Global Peace Index? This annual report ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness. Produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), it covers 99.7% of the world’s population and examines what factors can increase or decrease peacefulness.
TEAM is pleased to offer a special presentation about the Global Peace Index. We are offering two times for this event in hopes of serving both those who teach in the day and in the evening.
- Monday, December 3rd, 2018
- MITT English Language Centre 609 Erin St.
- Monday, December 17th, 2018
- University of Winnipeg (room TBD)
Our presenter, Eduardo Costa, is a Rotary Peace Scholar and IEP Peace Ambassador. An economist, development practitioner, and peace scholar from the Brazilian Amazon, he was a 2010 Rotary Peace Fellow at the Duke/UNC Rotary Peace Center in North Carolina. He later worked as Special Advisor to the Governor of the State of Pará, Brazil. Eduardo is presently working in the PhD Program in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Manitoba. His presentations about the Global Peace Index in Brazil, Canada, and the United States aim to increase awareness of the drivers of peace as well as give local organizations concrete tools to help build peace in their communities.
This high-interest event will appeal to anyone with an interest in global peace and conflict issues. Not only is this event FREE for TEAM members, we are also pleased to offer free attendance for one guest per TEAM member with membership paid since September 1st, 2018.
Remember, if you pay your membership by November 30th, your name will be entered to win two passes to Thermea! Winner will be drawn at the December 3rd event and contacted afterwards if not present.
Mini-unConference: Following the presentation, we will provide an opportunity for language professionals to discuss how the GPI might inform their teaching and consider possibilities for its use in the classroom.
Attention TEAM Members:
The previously announced Teacher Wellness event scheduled for September 20th, 2018 has been cancelled due to low registration numbers and weather conditions.
Stay tuned for other TEAM events soon!

Teaching is very rewarding, but it is also a very demanding and often emotionally taxing role. Did you know teachers often make 1,500 decisions per day, or 4 per second? Depending on the clientele you serve, you may also experience secondary traumatic stress.
What do you do to cope with burnout? Come and share your strategies and methods with other like-minded teachers at our upcoming unConference – Teacher Wellness Focus! At an unConference, there is no keynote, no plenary, no presenters – WE are the presenters! Learn new ways to manage stress from your colleagues and participate in wellness activities during the event.
We will begin with a sharing circle discussion to share positive experiences, ideas and strategies for improving wellness. Please bring a blanket to sit on. Fabulous wellness oriented door prizes will be awarded at the end of the discussion period. Following the discussion, attendees will break into smaller groups to participate in various wellness activities of your choice for as long as you care to stay.
Possible activities include:
- Walk and talk in the beautiful Leo Mol Sculpture Garden.
- Take a Zumba class with Tracey Craigon.
- Walk/jog/run & exercise on the Terry Fox Fitness Trail.
- Rent a bike from http://www.bee2getherbikes.com/ and go for a ride. (own expense)
- If you or someone you know would be willing to do a free guided mediation or yoga session, or you have an idea for another activity that might be suitable for this event, please provide details in the RSVP form, linked below.
This event is free to all TEAM members. Membership should be renewed in September of each year. Please ensure that your membership is paid prior to the event. You can renew your membership here.
PLEASE RSVP BEFORE SEPTEMBER 17th AS THE EVENT WILL BE CANCELLED IF WE HAVE FEWER THAN 10 PEOPLE REGISTER. There is no attendance limit for this event.
We hope to see you there!
TESL Canada Discussion – a TEAM unConference Special Presentation
Date: Wednesday, May 2nd, 2018
Time: 6:00 to 8:30pm (doors open at 5:30 for coffee and mingling)
Location: University of Winnipeg – Room 1M30
The past year or so has been an interesting one for ESL educators in Manitoba. We have seen a lot of change and heard a lot of new information, including some misinformation, about what is going on with TESL Canada.
This TEAM unConference Special Presentation will focus on the changes to TESL Canada’s structure and services. We hope to address any questions our membership may have and clarify any misconceptions about what this means for TEAM and for our members.
We also want to hear what you have to say! Participate in our Fishbowl Discussion about TESL Canada and TEAM’s future with the organization. Share your opinion and give the TEAM board your feedback about what you would like to see your professional organization do for you.
Finally, we would like to give you more information about our new series of unConference PD events and get your feedback about what topics and issues you most want to see addressed at our upcoming unConferences.
Please RSVP if you would like to make your voice heard at this special TEAM event!

FREE Evening PD Event: unConference – Literacy Focus

Time: 5:30pm to 8:30pm
Location: Manitoba Institute of Trades & Technology – Erin Campus – 609 Erin St.
Would you like an opportunity to talk to you fellow educators? Every educator has been to a conference or PD session where they heard some great ideas or met some interesting people, but didn’t have enough time to talk things through or get to know each other. We all have brilliant ideas, great project plans, amazing exercises or even just great questions that we never have chance to talk about with our fellow educators. unConferences provide that chance! There is no keynote, no plenary, no presenters – WE are the presenters! All content will be attendee-generated! Sessions will be held in themed rooms where informal discussion will create opportunities to connect. Share you ideas and ask questions about what others have to say. Network with like-minded educators in the same field and focus areas. Talk to others with the same questions and concerns. Share experiences, wisdom and tips. Beg, borrow or steal fabulous ideas for your future lessons.
This unConference will be an evening event. The focus is ESL Literacy. This event is free to all TEAM members and/or TEAL members. Please ensure that your membership is paid prior to registering. Please note that registration is limited to 40 attendees. Registration closes on March 9th.
We are also seeking moderators to facilitate discussion in each room. If you would like to volunteer as a moderator, please contact Cintia Costa at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
